Helen and Harry
Demetriou, Chris and Valli Koumi welcome you to the Harry and Helen opened their
first store at Ashfield, Sydney in 1964 and continued to trade from those
premises until 1967. In 1967
they relocated their store to Bankstown, Sydney, where they continued to trade
their successful business until 1978. From
1978 to 1981 Harry and Helen were involved in trawler operations in both South
Australia and Western Australia. In 1981 Helen and Harry Demetriou started De Costi Brothers which operated from the Sydney Fish Markets and this business became the biggest and one of the most successful retail and wholesalers of seafood in the southern hemisphere. Harry is one of the most respected people in the seafood market industry both for his skill as a successful businessman, but also for his skills as a person of honesty and good repute. About 5 years ago, after having visited the Gold Coast area on a number of occasions for holidays, Harry and Helen, Chris and Valli decided that they were wanting to relocate to the beautiful Gold Coast. Helen and Harry's two other
children, Maria and Lisa are also involved in seafood businesses with their
husbands with sites at Cronulla and The Entrance on the central Charis Seafoods at Harley Park, Labrador on the Gold Coast, was previously a small seafood kiosk (no seafood market) and a restaurant. It was Harry's vision that the site, being a beautiful site with a vista over the Broadwater, would be a magnificent site for a kiosk and seafood market.
Charis Seafoods currently has over 5,000 regular customers weekly and in peak season, as many as 7,500 customers per week made up from locals, day trippers and holidayers. Many of the customers see the business as a place to buy fresh seafood product, and many visit the business as a tourist attraction to watch the feeding of the pelicans (which the business has now become very well known for) Harry, Helen, Chris and Valli have adopted a very "hands on" approach to the way their business is carried on. They are all involved in the business on a day to day basis. Charis Seafoods is closed on Mondays. The business trades all public holidays, except for Christmas day. We are open from 7.30 am Tuesday to Sunday (closed Mondays)
